Cosmetic Surgery Highlights
In 2008, breast enlargement bypassed liposuction as the most popular cosmetic surgery performed in the United States for the first time, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Out of 10.2 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2008, surgeons performed almost 356,000 breast augmentation surgeries as compared to a little more than 341,000 liposuctions. While overall surgeries were down to the economic downturn, millions of Americans continued to seek treatments to tone their bodies and take years off their faces. Cosmetic surgery procedures continue to find new heights of popularity for Houston cosmetic surgeons as well as other cosmetic surgeons across the United States.
Other 2008 cosmetic surgery highlights of note include:
• Rounding out the top five, eyelid surgery was third most popular, nose jobs or rhinoplasty was fourth and tummy tucks were fifth in overall cosmetic procedures.
• The top nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were: 1) Botox injections, 2) Laser hair removal, 3) Hyaluronic acid injections, 4) Chemical peels and 5) Laser skin resurfacing.
• Women and men in the United States spent almost $12 billion on various cosmetic procedures in 2008, including about $7.2 billion on surgical operations and $4.6 billion on nonsurgical procedures.
• While cosmetic surgery continues to grow in popularity with men, women still had about 92 percent of all cosmetic procedures. Men, in particular, sought liposuction, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery among surgical procedures and Botox and laser hair removal among non-surgical procedures.
• Women and men ages 35 to 50 were the most common cosmetic surgery patients, representing 45 percent of total procedures and about 4.6 million procedures overall. Botox and liposuction were the most popular procedures in this group. Senior citizens ages 65 and up had about six percent of total treatments and teens represent two percent of cosmetic surgery patients.
• Ethnic minorities represented about 20 percent of all cosmetic procedures.
• Cosmetic surgeons continue to see more clients before summer (bikini season), weddings, reunions and other special occasions. Menopause and the desire to lose weight are also popular motivations for cosmetic procedures.
• Cosmetic surg

ery is no longer for the wealthy only and is being considered by more and more people of all economic brackets.
• More smaller or mini-treatments with little to no downtime are being sought, including instant liquid face lifts and mini liposuction. Likewise, combination treatment plans that address several issues at the same time are also growing in popularity.
• More people undergoing cosmetic surgery choose to travel for the procedure for reasons of privacy.
• Finally, experts predict a cosmetic surgery boom in 2015 with more than 55 million cosmetic surgery procedures expected to be performed, according to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery magazine. This marked growth will be spurred by technological advances, increased awareness and marketing campaigns.
These statistics were compiled through an annual survey from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery that was sent to more than 16,000 board-certified plastic surgeons, dermatologists and otolaryngologists; about 900 completed surveys were returned and compiled.
